Download DxWnd Stable Build
Get the most reliable version of DxWnd, fully tested for compatibility with Windows 11 and legacy DirectX titles.
How to Install & Run DxWnd Stable Build
DxWnd is a “Portable Application,” meaning it doesn’t require a traditional Windows installation process.
1. Unpack the Archive
Once you’ve downloaded the dxwnd.v2.06.13.rar (or .zip) file, extract its contents to a permanent folder on your drive.
Tip: Avoid placing it in C:\Program Files\ to prevent Windows permission conflicts. We recommend C:\Games\DxWnd.
2. Admin Privileges
Find dxwnd.exe in the folder. Right-click it and select “Properties”. Under the “Compatibility” tab, check “Run this program as an administrator”. This is crucial for the software to intercept system calls from your games.
3. First Launch
Double-click dxwnd.exe. The main interface will appear. You’ll see a blank list where you can add your games. You can immediately start dragging and dropping game executables into this window to begin configuration.
๐ System Requirements & Compatibility
Whatโs Inside the Download Package?
Understanding the core files ensures you don’t accidentally delete essential components.
Pro Tip: Always keep the dxwnd.dll and dxwnd.exe in the same directory. If you move the executable alone, the program will fail to hook into games.
What’s New in the Stable Build (v2.06.13)
This release focuses on enhancing the DirectX 9 to windowed redirection and improving input precision for high-DPI displays.
Windows 11 24H2 Optimization
Specific hooks have been refined to prevent the “Desktop Window Manager (DWM)” from interfering with legacy 8-bit color palettes, ensuring flicker-free gameplay on the latest Windows updates.
Enhanced Mouse Virtualization
Fixed cursor “trapping” issues in games like Command & Conquer and Warcraft II. The new absolute mouse coordinates mapping allows for a seamless transition between the game window and the desktop.
GDI & Font Scaling
Improved font rendering for GDI-based applications. Legacy text-heavy games (like old Koei strategy titles) now display crisp, readable text even when scaled to modern 1080p windows.

Download Troubleshooting
Having trouble getting the files? Here are the solutions to common download issues.
“This file is not commonly downloaded” – Chrome/Edge Warning
Because DxWnd is a niche system tool, Google SafeBrowsing may flag it. This is not a virus warning. Click the arrow/three dots next to the download and select “Keep” to proceed.
The ZIP file appears to be corrupted
Ensure you are using the latest version of 7-Zip or WinRAR. Older decompression tools may fail to open the latest stable archives due to updated compression algorithms used in v2.06.13.
Why is there no .msi or .exe installer?
DxWnd is strictly portable to prevent unwanted system registry changes. It allows you to carry your game configurations on a USB drive and run them on any machine without installation.
Can I download older stable versions?
Yes. While we recommend the latest build for Windows 11, our SourceForge Archive contains every stable release since 2012 for those testing on extremely old hardware.
Safety Commitment & Fair Play
100% Open Source Transparency
DxWnd is licensed under the GNU General Public License v2.0. This means the source code is public, audited by the community, and guaranteed to be free from spyware or hidden telemetry. Every stable build we host is compiled directly from the official repository.
โ ๏ธ Online Gaming & Anti-Cheat Notice
DxWnd is designed for Single-Player Retro Games. We strongly advise against using DxWnd while playing modern online multiplayer games (e.g., games with Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, or Ricochet). The hooking mechanism could be misinterpreted as a “third-party cheat tool,” potentially leading to account bans.
By downloading DxWnd, you agree to use this tool responsibly for game preservation and compatibility purposes. We do not support or condone the use of DxWnd for illicit activities or gaining unfair advantages in competitive play.
Pre-configured Game Profiles
Stop struggling with manual settings. Your download includes 100+ ready-to-use profiles for the most popular retro titles.

Post-Download Technical FAQ
Running into issues after extracting DxWnd? Find the most common technical solutions here.
Q: I get a “Missing MSVCP140.dll” error when launching dxwnd.exe.
Solution: DxWnd requires the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Ensure you have the x86 version installed, even if your OS is 64-bit, as most legacy games and the DxWnd hooker operate in 32-bit mode. You can download it directly from the Microsoft official website.
Q: The game starts but DxWnd doesn’t seem to “hook” it.
Solution: First, verify that both dxwnd.exe and the game’s executable are running with Administrator privileges. Second, check if the game path in the DxWnd configuration exactly matches your installation folder. If using a launcher (like Steam or GOG), try pointing DxWnd directly to the game’s internal .exe file.
Q: How do I backup my game list and settings?
Solution: All your settings are stored in the dxwnd.ini file located in the main folder. Simply copy this file to a safe location or another DxWnd installation to keep your custom profiles and configurations intact.
