DxWnd FAQ

Straight answers about DxWnd — what it is, whether it is free and safe, the current version, and how windowed mode works.

What is DxWnd?

DxWnd is a free, open-source Windows program — a “window hooker” — that intercepts system calls so fullscreen Win32 programs, mostly legacy games, can run in a window instead. It also adds compatibility features such as time stretching and CD audio emulation. It is developed by ghotik (gho) and hosted on SourceForge.

Is DxWnd free?

Yes. DxWnd is free and open-source, and its source code is available on SourceForge. If a website asks you to pay for DxWnd itself, that is not the project’s download.

Is DxWnd safe?

DxWnd is published by its developer on SourceForge, its official home, and has been developed in the open there since 2011. Because it hooks system calls, some antivirus programs flag it as a false positive. The safe approach is to download from SourceForge and verify the file’s MD5 and SHA-256 hashes — our download page publishes both for the current release.

What is the latest version of DxWnd?

v2.06.16, released on October 16, 2026, as the file v2_06_16_build.rar (9,623,111 bytes). New builds appear in the project’s SourceForge files area, and the full release notes ship inside every download as readme-relnotes.txt.

Does DxWnd work on Windows 11?

Yes — running older games on current Windows, including Windows 11 and 10, is its main use case, and new builds are still being released. It is aimed at DirectDraw and Direct3D-era titles, and most games need some per-game settings; 16-bit programs are handled with help from the bundled winevdm component.

How do I run a game in windowed mode with DxWnd?

Download and extract the archive, run dxwnd.exe (as administrator if a game needs it), choose Edit > Add and point DxWnd at the game’s executable, keep “Run in Window” enabled, save, then launch the game from inside DxWnd by double-clicking its entry. The full walkthrough is in our step-by-step guide to using DxWnd.

My antivirus flagged DxWnd. What should I do?

Verify the file first: compare its SHA-256 hash with the value published on our download page — the same value SourceForge lists for the file. If the hashes differ, delete the file and download it again from SourceForge. Only consider an antivirus folder exclusion for a file whose hash you have verified.

Can I use DxWnd with online or multiplayer games?

We strongly recommend against it. DxWnd’s hooking can look like cheat software to anti-cheat systems (such as Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye), which can get accounts banned. DxWnd is meant for offline, single-player retro games.

Is dxwnd.net the official DxWnd website?

No. dxwnd.net is an independent resource site. The official home of DxWnd is its project page on SourceForge, where the developer publishes the downloads, the source code and the support forum. Every download on this site links to those official files.
